Bringing your own

OTZ’s high speed internet service requires customers to have a paid internet account and an ADSL modem. First time OTZ customers will be sold an install kit that includes a BEC modem. For customers that already own a modem, refer to “Bringing your own modem” section below.

Self installation of an ADSL modem is an option that can save you the initial cost of a $45.00 OTZ assisted installation fee. To help new installers in there effort, the following installation instructions are provided for the Paradyne 6210 and the DLink 302G. For other modem types see, “Bringing your own modem” below.

Pre-installation notes: Before installing your modem you must make an assessment of what type of port connections are available on your computer. First, look for your systems Ethernet port. It will be located on the back of your desktop system, or if you have a laptop, it could be on the side. Once a port is located, continue on with your selected modem model below.

BEC DSL Modem Install

(1) Take the power cord of the BEC modem and plug it into an outlet. Turn the modems on/off switch to on. The power light for the modem should now be green. The system light will blink while your modem boots.

(2) Take the DSL filter and plug it into the telephone wall jack that carries your active phone/internet service.

(3) Plug a telephone cord into the connection labeled DSL/HPN.

(4) Take the opposite end of the same telephone cord and plug it into the BEC modem port labeled line. Within a few minutes you should see the ADSL light on the modem start to rapidly blink (this indicates that the modem is trying to sync-up with the internet equipment). Once the green flashing light stops flashing and turns a solid green, the modem has successfully connected to the internet.

Using the Ethernet cable (steps 5-7)

(5) Take the ethernet cable and plug into any four the LAN connections on the modem.

(6) Take the opposite end of ethernet cable and plug it into the active LAN port on your computer or laptop.

(7) Your computer should automatically acquire the address information it needs to provide your access to the internet.

Paradyne 6210 DSL Modem Install

(1) Take the power cord of the Paradyne modem and plug it into an outlet. The power light for the modem should now be green.

(2) Take the telephone cord and plug it into the telephone wall jack that carries your active telephone/internet service. If your telephone is currently plugged into the jack you need to use, then unplug your telephone cord and insert the new modem cord.

(3) Take the opposite end of the telephone cord and plug it into the Paradyne modem port labeled LINE. Within few minutes you should see the Status light on the modem start to blink (this indicates that the modem is trying to sync-up with the internet equipment). Once the green flashing light stops flashing and turns to a solid green light, then the modem has successfully connected to the internet.

Using the Ethernet cable (steps 4-6)

(4) Take the ethernet cable and plug into the LAN connection on the modem.

(5) Take the opposite end of the ethernet cable and plug it into the LAN port on your computer or laptop.

(6) Your computer should automatically acquire the address information it needs to provide your access to the internet.

Filtering your phone

Do not put the DSL filter splitter on the same jack as the Paradyne modem.

The DSL/phone splitter filter device should be attached to any other phone jack being used in the home.
One per phone used. The Paradyne modem has a built-in filter. You may plug a telephone that you want to use near the computer, directly into the modem itself.

DLink 302G DSL Modem Install

(1) Take the power cord of the DLink modem and plug it into an outlet. The power light for the modem should now be a steady green and the status light (also green) will blink randomly.

(2) Take the DSL filter and plug it into the telephone wall jack that carries your active phone/internet service.

(3) Plug a telephone cord into the connection labeled DSL/HPN.

(4) Take the opposite end of the same telephone cord and plug it into the DLink modem port labeled ADSL. Within a few minutes you should see the ADSL light on the modem start to rapid blink (this indicates that the modem is trying to sync-up with the internet equipment). Once the green flashing light stops flashing and turns to a slow blinking green light, then the modem has successfully connected to the internet.

Using the Ethernet cable (steps 5-7)

(5) Take the ethernet cable and plug into the LAN connection on the modem.

(6) Take the opposite end of ethernet cable and plug it into the active LAN port on your computer or laptop.

(7) Your computer should automatically acquire the address information it needs to provide your access to the internet.

Bringing your own modem

Modems other than BEC, Paradyne or Dlink 302G models may not all be compatible or suitable for OTZ’s DSL network. If you bring your own modem and request OTZ’s internet service, please let our staff know so that we can make an assessment of the equipment. Most new models can work, but several older models such as various SpeedStream (Efficient Networks) modems, can at times, induce errors between the customer’s home and our equipment. In such cases we invoke our Acceptable Use Policy (see AUP link), turn off the effected circuit and notify the customer of the problem.

Extra filters can be purchased from OTZ.
