Tools & Support - Installing your DSL
Paradyne 6210
Dlink 302G
Bringing your own

OTZ’s high speed internet service requires customers to have a paid internet account and an ADSL modem. First time OTZ customers will be sold an install kit that includes a Paradyne 6210 modem.                         For customers that already own a modem, refer to “Bringing your own modem” section below.

Self installation of an ADSL modem is an option that can save any customer the initial cost of an $45.00 OTZ assisted installation fee.        To help new installers in there effort, the following installation instructions are provided for the Paradyne 6210 and the DLink 302G. For other modem types see, “Bringing your own modem” below.

Pre-installation notes: Before installing your modem you must make an assessment of what type of port connections are available on your computer. First, look for your systems Ethernet port. It will be located on the back of your desktop system, or if you have a laptop, it could be on the side (see diagram included with the modem for illustration). If you can not find an Ethernet port, then locate an open USB port. Both Ethernet and USB are reliable connections but only one can be used at a time. Once a port is located, continue on with your selected modem model below.

Paradyne 6210 DSL Modem Install

The $125.00 Initial install kit contains:
* APC Surge protector
* Paradyne 6210 ADSL modem (both Ethernet and USB cables provided)
* ADSL/phone filter
* CDROM device driver

Installing the Paradyne 6210
(1) Remove the APC surge protector from the box and plug into a power outlet. (2) Turn on the power switch to the APC unit. A Green light should appear on the unit indicating power is on. (3) Take the power cord of the Paradyne modem and plug it into the surge protector. The power light for the modem should now be green. (4) Take the telephone cord (provided by Paradyne) and plug it into the telephone wall jack that carries your active telephone/internet service. If your telephone is currently plugged into the jack you need to use, then unplug your telephone cord and insert the new modem cord. Do not use the included DSL filter/splitter on this connection. (5) Take the opposite end of the telephone cord and plug it into the Paradyne modem port labeled LINE. Within a minute you should see the Status light on the modem start to blink (this indicates that the modem is trying to sync-up with the internet equipment). Once the green flashing light stops flashing and turns to a solid green light, then the modem has successfully connected to the internet. (6) Based on your assessment of what port connection you have on your computer, follow the instruction for ether Ethernet or USB cable connection below.

Using the white Ethernet cable option (steps 7-9)

(If this option is chosen, do not install the USB cable or use the CD provided).

(7) Take the white Ethernet cable and plug it into the LAN connection on the modem. (8) Take the opposite end of this white cable and plug it into the active LAN port on your computer or laptop. (9) Turn on your computer. Once fully started, your computer should automatically acquire the address information it needs to provide your access to the internet. If your computer was already on, then select start and shutdown, and select restart.

Using the grey USB cable option (steps 7-11)

(If this option is chosen, do not install the Ethernet cable).

(7) Make sure your computer is turned on. If not, turn on at this time. (8) Once the computer is back to the windows desktop, take the grey USB cable and connect it to the USB port on the modem (only one end of the cable will fit into the modems USB port). (9) Plug the opposite end of the cable into a USB designated port on your computer (location of the ports vary per computer). Upon plugging the USB cable into your computer system, Windows will prompt you for the Paradyne CD. (10) Insert the CD into your CDROM and the program should begin to self install. (11) In the popup window, use the already highlighted Paradyne device, and then click next (Any remaining windows that popup, select Next, Continue, and/or Finish, to complete the install). After the driver is loaded Windows will need to restart. Once fully started, your computer should automatically acquire the address information it needs to provide your access to the internet.

Filtering your phone

Do not put the DSL filter splitter on the same jack as the Paradyne modem.

The tan DSL/phone splitter filter device should be attached to any other phone jack being used in the home.
One per phone used. The Paradyne modem has a built-in filter. You may plug a telephone that you want to use near the computer, directly into the modem itself.

(9) Turn on your computer. Once fully started, your computer should automatically acquire the address information it needs to provide your access to the internet. If your computer was already on, then select start and shutdown, and select restart.

Using the silver USB cable option (steps 7-14)

(If this option is chosen, do not install the Ethernet cable).

(12) Plug the opposite end of the silver cable into a USB designated port on your computer (location of the ports vary per computer). (13) Upon plugging the USB cable into your computer system, Windows will begin building a virtual drive for your internet connection. Windows will ask to connect to the internet to search for software, select no to continue). (14) Select install automatically, and then continue. Once completed, your computer should automatically acquire the address information it needs to provide your access to the internet.

Bringing your own modem

Modems other than Paradyne or Dlink 302G models may not all be compatible or suitable for OTZ’s DSL network. If you bring your own modem and request OTZ’s high speed internet service, please let our staff know so that we can make an assessment of the equipment. Most new models can work, but several older models such as various SpeedStream (Efficient Networks) modems, can at times, induce errors between the customer’s home and our equipment. In such cases we invoke our Acceptable Use Policy (see AUP link), turn off the effected circuit and notify the customer of the problem.

When bringing your own modem, the procedure for connecting to OTZ’s internet will vary based on the vendor of the modem. You will have to determine for yourself whether a DSL filter is needed (Extra filters can be purchased from OTZ).
